Verza

Dragash

Verza, or the first day of spring, is a traditional holiday in the municipality of Dragash/Dragaš. It is assumed that the celebration of this day originates from antiquity where this day is considered a pagan holiday. Traditionally, due to the fact that severe winters prevail in the region of Dragash/Dragaš municipality, the inhabitants of this region are very much looking forward to the arrival of spring. The ceremony usually begins on March 13, a date known in Opoja region as the “Night of Faith”. During this day of celebration, young women gather in groups and sing folk songs of the place dedicated to the arrival of spring, while young men gather wood and bushes and prepare them to light a bonfire. Bonfires are usually lit in the evening on a hill near the village and have a competitive character between the villages. Housewives also cook traditional local food such as flija on this day.
